Walker The Sheperd Boy
James longs for the day he is old enough to be a shepherd like his father, and when Christmas comes, almost a year later, he receives a very special present. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Editorial Reviews From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 2-- James wants to be just like his father, a shepherd, but he has to wait until he is a little older. Warm pastel colored-pencil drawings show James watching his father feed spring lambs and clip sheep, or his mother pack wool for shipping in summer. Alongside his parents, James practices shearing, herding, and washing on a toy sheep he carries around. He accompanies his father to market in the fall when the lambs are sold and helps feed sheep in the winter. Finally, at Christmas, James receives the longed-for shepherd's crook and cap plus his very own sheepdog puppy. Lewis lovingly portrays the Northumberland countryside, the closeness of the farm family, and the yearly cycle of sheep-raising. Good for seasonal sharing but also a useful life-cycle informational book on farms or occupations. --Susan Hepler, Alexandria City Public Schools, VA Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
